He came to America in 1770, located in the vicinity of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and six years later joined his brother in Allegheny County, taking up a tract of 386 acres.

He was the father of six children, three of whom were sons.

There is confusion over whether this family came from Scotland or Ireland.
