BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN WETTLING
(Third son of Henry and Eva Dorthea Whitling)
John Wettling was born in Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, in the village of Niederbachdorf. He came to this country in 1828 with his parents and lived in New York City until 1831 when they came to Emlenton, Pa. They had a farm in New York on the ground that is now Wall St.
John was united in marriage to Marie Exley, born in 1821, in Welesheim. She came with her parents to America on the same boat as the Whitling family.
John Wettling was the only branch that retained the original German spelling of Whitling.
John Wettling, the subject of this sketch, was a shoemaker, and when a young man, he was interested in tanning leather, and he owned and operated a tannery, which was located in Emlenton, Pa., Venango County.
Some buildings, located near the tannery, caught fire in 1861, and set the tannery on fire, and burned it to the ground, a total loss.
He did not rebuild, but purchased a farm; remained on this farm about a year, then he sold this farm to his brother, George. He then purchased another farm in Richland Township, Clarion County, at East Foxburg.
John Wettling was one of the organizers of the Lutheran Church in Emlenton, Pa., and helped to erect the Lutheran Church there.
He ventured into the oil business, and had thirteen producing oil wells on his farm. He lived on this farm till May 1870.
He sold this farm, and on May 25, 1870, purchased an 83 acre farm in White Township, Indiana County, Pa., for $8,500. This farm was on the edge of the boro of Indiana. Today it is a part of Indiana city, which is the county seat of Indiana County, Pa.
When John Wettling moved to Indiana, Pa., he took with him seven of his children, namely: Martin, Jacob, William Frederick, Lewis, Lydia, Emma and Christine.
