Civil War: he served in company F, 133d Pennsylvania volunteers for eight months.
He read medicine with Dr. A. P. Field, an eclectic physician of Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the American Eclectic College of Philadelphia in 1871. He first located in Carrollton, Cambria County, remaining there and in Ebensburg about five years; he removed to Cookport, Indiana County, in 1876.
