General Notes: Husband - Joseph M. Spriggs

He attended the common schools of Washington, Pennsylvania, and Washington College, and when yet a boy commenced clerking in William Duvall's grocery store. In 1854 he embarked in business for himself and remained in that location for seventeen years. He was a year out of business, and in 1886 he erected a three-story building, equipped with all modern improvements, including an elevator, and there, under the firm of Joseph M. Spriggs & Sons, he engaged in a large and increasing business, comprising general grocery, hardware, feed, etc., the largest of the kind in Washington. In May, 1891, he commenced a grain elevator business in the city, which was in the charge of his son, Charles H.
He was a Republican in politics, and in church connection was for forty years a member of the M. E. Church, of which he was a steward.

He grew up in Washington, Pennsylvania, finished his education in old Washington College, and began his mercantile career as a clerk in William Duvall's grocery store, acquiring there a knowledge of the grocery business. For several years he was connected with this store and then became attracted to a proposition which took him to Rockford, Illinois, where he went into the general mercantile business in partnership with Henry Brown. For two years he remained there and then finding conditions not to his liking, disposed of his interests in that city and returned to Washington, where he became connected with the operations of the Hiner grocery store. In 1869 Mr. Spriggs, in partnership with George W. Driver, bought the grocery store of Harsha & Moore and did business under the firm name of Spriggs & Driver. In 1877 he bought his partner's interest in the establishment and thereafter carried on alone until 1891, when he admitted his two sons, Joseph B. and Charles Spriggs, to a partnership in the business, which thereafter was carried on under the firm name of Joseph M. Spriggs & Sons, and he continued active in business until his death about ten years later.
