General Notes: Husband - William Duffield
He was born in what is now Clinton (then Center) County, Pennsylvania, at the home in the Bald Eagle valley, and was a boy when the family settled in Venango County, where the remainder of his life was passed.
He lo-cated on a farm of 400 acres, west of the homestead. He was a veteran of the war of 1812, serving in two campaigns against the enemy's allies, the Indians, in Ohio and Indiana. He first enlisted under Capt. Fetterman, who took him to Allegheny, PA; then with Capt. Bonner under Gen. Harrison in a six months' campaign to Fort Meigs. His second enlistment was for forty days under Capt. John Martin, as teamster in a campaign to Fort Meigs. It was a perilous and trying expedition, as narrated by William in later years. In passing through the Black Swamp the oxen would sink in the mud almost to their horns. Then came cold weather, so cold that they had to chop their frozen bread with an axe and soak it in whisky before they could eat it.
A nephew (M. S. Duffield) says: "I have heard un-cle William relate that at one time when they fell behind the army he and two companions put in a bitterly cold night in this way: Having neither blankets, bedding, or anything to make a fire, and nothing more heating than a barrel of whisky that was part of the load, two would lie down in the bottom of the wagon and the third would lie on top of them until they became tired; then they would change places, take a drink of the 'fire-water,' lie down again, and so continue the program all night."
He never connected himself with any church, but he was Presbyterian in belief and affiliation. He was blind for several years before his death. His age was 92 years, the greatest attained by any of the name in this locality. His remains rest beside those of his wife in the Millcreek cemetery. [Duffield Family, 66]
