He was a graduate, with the highest honors, of the University of Pennsylvania. He held a first lieutenant's commission in a Philadelphia regiment of infantry, had two diplomas from the war department, was registered in Boston as captain of the Sinn-Feiners, and was a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity.
