He spent his early life on his father's homestead. In September, 1861, he enlisted in Company K, Fourth Pennsylvania Cavalry, and at the end of eighteen months' service was discharged for disability. He re-enlisted in October, 1863, in the same company, with which he served until the war was ended, being wounded at Dinwiddie Court House, March 31, 1865. Returning to his home he pur­chased a farm, and in 1868 developed thereon a coal mine which he worked extensively for several years. Politically he was a Prohi­bitionist, a member of the G. A. R., and an adherent of the Church of God. [HVC 1890, 962]
