He was born in the state of New York and was ten years old at the time of his parents' removal to Pennsylvania. He was reared to manhood on the homestead farm in Jefferson County, receiving the educational advantages afforded in the common schools of the locality and period, and he eventually became the owner of a portion of the old family farmstead, in Clover township, where he continued successful operations as an agriculturist until fifteen years prior to his death.
