General Notes: Husband - Dr. Asa L. Hamlin
He was of English descent and his parents and ancestors had resided for many generations in Litchfield County, Connecticut, his father removing to Pennsylvania in 1816.
He was one of a family of twenty-one children, was bred on a farm, and brought up under the old Puritanical regime as practiced by the New England Presbyterians. Amusements were rare, and Sunday was a day to be dreaded. He had scanty opportunities for education or culture in his youth, yet he improved them so well that he secured a profession in which he held a respectable rank. In those days, however, doctors' fees were small and hard to get. In June, 1833, he removed to Smethport, McKean County, with his wife and two younger children and died in 1835, leaving his family without financial means for their support. [HMEF, 436]
He was reared on the farm, attended the local schools, securing a good education, and later became a regular practicing physician. He moved to Fairfield, New York, about 1814, to Salem, Pennsylvania, in 1816, and to Smethport, Pennsylvania, 1833. He was a Federalist in politics and "reared under the puritanical regime of the Connecticut Presbyterians."
His childhood and early youth were spent on his father's farm, and during this time he was engaged in the occupation that was common to the farmer's boy of that day, while his training was according to the typical Puritanic regime. He attended the local public school where, by dint of persistent application, he possessed himself of a far better education than the average among his fellows. Eventually he began the study of medicine, and for a time practiced it in his native region. He removed from Connecticut to Fairfield, New York, in the year 1814, when he was a young man of thirty-four years of age. From Fairfield he went to Salem, Pennsylvania, and remained there until 1833, when he finally came to Smethport. He became very well known in the part of Pennsylvania where he practiced. He was a Federalist in politics, and a Presbyterian in religion. [PAH-NW, 9]
