He was a graduate of Allegheny College, Pennsylvania, class of 1840, professor in the same college, 1841-42, when he resigned to enter the ministry; he joined the Genesee conference of the Methodist Episcopal church in 1843, was appointed presiding elder in 1855, and later was principal of the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, at Lima, New York.
