General Notes: Husband - Dr. Sylvester D. Bell, M.D.

He obtained an academical education, and commenced the study of medicine in the office of Dr. T. M. McMillan, of Fairview, Butler County, PA. Passing through the required course of reading, and obtaining much practical knowledge from other sources than books, he went to the Cleveland Medical College, from which institution he graduated with honor in 1874. Prior to his graduation, he had established himself in the practice of his profession at Millerstown, and, on the completion of his medical course, returned to Millerstown, where he remained. He was highly successful in his chosen profession, and, even when a comparatively a young practitioner, he occupied a foremost position among the physicians of Butler County. He was a member of both the county and State Medical Societies.
The Doctor also took an active interest in political matters, and, in 1880, was elected to the Representative branch of the State Legislature. His official duties were discharged with credit to himself, and to the satisfaction of his constituents, and his record as a legislator evidences the possession of many of the essential qualifications of the successful physician-good judgment, quick perception and honesty of purpose. [HBC 1883, 82X]

He was reared in Butler County, PA, obtained a common school education, and afterwards attended West Sunbury Academy and Witherspoon Institute. He commenced reading medicine under Dr. T. M. McMillan, of Fairview township, and attended lectures at the medical department of the Western Reserve College, Cleveland, Ohio, in 1870-71 and 1873-74, graduating in March, 1874. He commenced practice at Millerstown, Butler county, where he continued in the active duties of his profession until May, 1890, when he removed to Butler, and there built up a very large and lucrative practice. He was one of the surgeons for the Pittsburg and Western Railroad Company. He was president of the Butler County Medical Society for one year, and filled the office of secretary and treasurer of the same for three terms. He was a member of the State Medical Society and of the American Medical Association, and was vice-president of the former in 1891-92, and also was a member of the National Association of Railway Surgeons. He and his family were connected with Grace Lutheran church. He was an active Republican, served as chairman of the county committee, was elected to the legislature in 1881, and was one of the presidential electors in 1892. [HBC 1895, 725]
