General Notes: Husband - Dr. Cyrus Donaldson

He tried to volunteer in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was unable to do so, however, because of his small size. He moved to Iowa as a young man. There seems to have been relatives in the area, as he mentions in his letters, relatives that lived nearby. He became a schoolmaster and apparently taught school for a number of years. He married Adele Hall
in the year 1875 when he was 32 years of age. She, too, was a school teacher, and for a short period of time they both taught school. The salaries of teachers during this period was so poor, Cyrus decided to quit teaching and went to work as a pharmacist, at his brother-in-law's drug store in the town of Little Sioux, Iowa. He soon decided to go into medicine, and apprenticed under a country doctor in the town of Liscombe, Iowa. At this time a doctor could practice medicine with out a degree from a medical college, however after working as a doctor for about a year, he decided that it would be to his advantage to have a degree in Medicine. He quit his practice and went to Chicago where he attended Rush Medical College. He obtained his M.D. degree in February of 1879. He returned to Little Sioux to practice Medicine. He died in a Diphtheria epidemic and was buried in the small cemetery east of town.
