He was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania. At the age of four years he was taken to Greensburg, Westmoreland County, by his parents. His youth was spent attending the public schools and assisting his father on the home farm. But his home duties were not allowed to interfere with his education, and later in life he found how wise this procedure had been for he was able to engage in teaching as well as agriculture, the former adding materially to his income and enabling him.to give his children superior educational advantages.

Her maternal [sic] grandfather, Robert Dinsmore, was a native of Ireland, and was married to Margaret Livingston, of Aberdeen, Scotland. Upon their
arrival in America they settled in Burrell township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
