Tradition says was descended from French Hugenots who settled in Scotland. He came to America when a young man and was married, he and his wife settling in that part of Perry Township later included in Sandy Creek Township, Mercer County, PA, and there bought timber land about two miles east of Sheakleyville and cleared a farm from the original forest. He was widely known as one of the pioneer schoolmasters and was a strict disciplinarian. He was a Presbyterian and for a long time a deacon in the church. He had twelve children, eight sons.
