He was reared on the family homestead in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, receiving a good education, and taught school several terms in his native township. He was engaged in the lumber business with his father, and was one of the pioneer oil operators of Venango County. In 1872 he formed a partnership with Hon. Levi Morrison for the manufacture of shingles and staves, this firm being among the pioneer dealers in the latter commodity. They carried on the stave business for a number of years in West Virginia. Mr. Couse was also interested in the grist and saw-mills of Sheakleyville.
At the time of Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania Mr. Couse joined Company H, Fifty-fifth Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia, which was afterward mustered into the United States service.
After reaching manhood Mr. Couse took an active interest in the growth and development of the public schools of Sandy Creek. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Sheakleyville, a class-leader in that body, and superintendent of the Sabbath-school, and was one of the enterprising and respected citizens of his native township.

He was educated in the common schools and Greenville Academy and remained at home until twenty-one years of age, when he engaged in farming, and later in lumbering, in Kennerdell, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and also in West Virginia, with Levi Morrison, the firm being Morrison and Couse. They operated both stave and shingle mills and continued in such business in Virginia about three years, when Mr. Couse returned home to Mercer County and there followed the lumber business. June 28, 1863, seized with the fever of patriotism as the great civil conflict was at its highest tide, he enlisted in Company H, Fifty-fifth Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment, under Col. A. G. Curtin, responding to the call of President Lincoln for more "three months' men." He re-enlisted at Pittsburgh and was mustered into the United States service at that place and from there went to Parkersburg, West Virginia, reporting to Judge Stone, Col. Robert McCombs having command. Mr. Couse was at Fredericksburg during Morgan's raid and after having served his full time as specified in his enlistment, was discharged at Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, August 26, 1863. He was first sergeant of Company H, under Captain John W. Stinson, of Greenville. In his political affiliations Mr. Couse was an ardent Republican. He belonged to the Methodist Episcopal church and was Sunday school superintendent many years.
