General Notes: Husband - David Collins

---

When nineteen years old he began work as a stonemason, which trade he followed four years. He came to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1835, and ran coal to New Orleans sixteen years. In 1850 he bought a farm, built a house and barn, and moved thereon the same autumn, and became successful as a farmer. From the age of eighteen he was connected with the Presbyterian Church, as were all his family except the youngest son. Politically Mr. Collins was an abolitionist; later a republican; and was county commissioner of Allegheny County for three years during the civil war. [HAC 1889 II, 415]

He attended the common schools in the vicinity of his home. In 1835 he had the first coal incline in his section of the country, located opposite McKeesport, Pennsylvania, sending a portion of his coal to New Orleans. In 1850 he purchased a farm in Penn township, Allegheny County, and this he operated successfully until his death. In his early life he learned the trade of stone mason, but this not proving to his liking, he never worked at it, securing employment in the mills. He was a Presbyterian in religion, and an Abolitionist in politics, and during the Civil War served one term as county commissioner of Allegheny County. [GPHWP, 1011]
