Ray E. Lyons, age 89, residence 9871 Townline Road, Greenfield Township, died on Sunday August 21, 2005 at Hamot Medical Center. He was born on March 28, 1916 in Greenfield, Pa. to the late Bert and Grace Prindle Lyons. He lived most of his life in Greenfield Township where he developed a dairy farm and raised beef cattle. Ray drove a truck for Lyons Transportation Line (LTL) since February of 1937 for his Uncle Charlie (Charlie Lyons founder of the company) who owned the business. When Lyons Transportation moved from East 18th Street to 16 and French Street, Ray helped tear down the old arena building to make room for the new terminal. Ray was known as "North East Ray" because he lived in Greenfield North East all of his life but was the North East Westfield peddle run driver for over 30 years, he also made runs to Oil City, Jamestown, Bradford, and Olean. He retired in December of 1978. He was the oldest active member of the Greenfield Baptist Church and loved deer hunting and watching purple martins and blue birds. He was preceded in death by his wife Wilda J. Coburn Lyons (8-14-01); brothers Elmer Lyons and Earl R. Lyons; a son-in-law Robert Bartlett 7-22-04; and daughter-in-law Deborah Lyons 6-21-05. He is survived by a son Daniel R. Lyons of North East; daughters Ruth Ann Bartlett of North East, Bette J. Lorman and husband George of Lyons, Colo.; sisters Ethleen Lafferty and husband Clayton of North East; sister-in-law Twila Lyons of North East; nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home 65 South Lake Street North East on Tuesday 7 to 9 and Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 and are invited to attend a funeral service on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Officiating Rev. David Waldo pastor of the Greenfield Baptist Church. Interment North East Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Greenfield Baptist Church 9028 Williams Road or the Community Nursing Services of North East 7 Park Street North East, PA 16428.
