General Notes: Husband - Jonathan Dunham

He first located in Mercer County, PA, where Andrew Byerly would later live, where he built a pole-shanty, but stayed only a short time, when he re-located on the hill, and built a log-house, about twenty rods west of the later residence of his son, Phineas Dunham. There was a fine spring just over the edge of the bluff, near where he built his log-cabin. He was a bachelor, and while living in his pole-shanty, hunted, and lived mostly upon the game, then very abundant in the country. He filled several township offices, and lived upon his farm until his death.
One day, while getting ready to go to a mill, where New Castle now stands, to buy a little corn meal, he spied an Indian creeping cautiously towards his cabin, with his gun cocked, and held in a position ready to fire. He immediately “picked his flint,” to make sure fire, and stepped out, with his rifle at his shoulder, and confronted the savage, who, as soon as he saw him, dropped his gun, and became “good Indian” at once. Mr. Dunham gave him some food, and the Indian went away in very good humor.
He built a large double log-barn a few years after his settlement, and, as was customary, had a “barn-raising.” There was considerable difficulty experienced in finding enough settlers to raise the big structure. Samuel Clark, the first settler at Clarksville, hearing of Dunham's trouble in finding hands, went around among his scattering neighbors, and gathered a company of ten, with whom he came down, and helped Dunham raise his barn. Cooking and eating utensils were so scarce at that day, that Clark and his company brought their own knives and forks along. [HMC 1877, 118]
