He received a common school education and grew to maturity on his father's farm. When twenty-six years of age he purchased a farm of fifty-four acres in Clay township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, on which he thereafter resided. He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian church, and he was a stanch adherent of the Republican party.
