General Notes: Husband - John Chess

Although he gave most of the years of his life to general farming, from his boyhood days he was greatly interested in the culture of bees, and continued it, more or less, as a specialty; after he relinquished active work of a general nature he devoted himself with ardor and success to what proved both a great pleasure and a decided source of income. He had as many as sixty-seven hives in full operation, producing 1,400 pounds of honey per season and representing the most extensive industry of the kind in Mercer County. It was an added success, in the agricultural line, to his other achievements which enabled him not only to educate and splendidly rear a large family of children, but to assure each of them a fine farm and homestead. In the midst of these activities John Chess was fully alive to the duties of citizenship, an early response to this call being his enlistment in Company H, Fifty-fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, under Captain Stinson. The regiment was organized at Camp Howell, Pittsburg, and sent to Parkersburg, West Virginia, where it joined the Union forces opposing the raid of the Confederate cavalry leader, John Morgan, into the state of Ohio. This experience earned Mr. Chess membership in the Grand Army of the Republic. In his civic relations he gave valuable service, for many years, as a supervisor and member of the school board, while as a religious member of the community he was many years a steward of the Methodist church and an active worker in its advancement, as well as a hearty supporter of all worthy charities.
