General Notes: Husband - John Chess

This family came from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, to what is now Mercer County in 1792. In that year John Chess came with his brother to the location of the Chess homestead and built a log house, preparatory to setting up a household and establishing a homestead in the wilderness. The Chess brothers were among the first three pioneers in northern Mercer County, and not long after their arrival John was joined by his wife, who came on horseback to arrange various household matters before the advent of the other members of the family; but she did not live to accomplish her mission in this regard. On her journey to Mercer County she captured a small cub bear and on her return to Westmoreland County, accompanied by a boy on horseback, she took the little animal with her, intending to present it to some member of her family. But in crossing a stream her horse became unmanageable and threw both into the water, Mrs. Chess drowning before assistance could reach her. Her husband and founder of the family in Mercer County, died of a fever contracted in the War of 1812. [HMC 1909, 984]
