He was a prominent and able lawyer, and practiced his profession in Illinois for some years, where he became secretary of state, and also repre­sented the Galena district in Congress. In 1852 he was appointed one of the United States land commissioners for California, and subsequently practiced law with great success in the San Francisco courts.
