General Notes: Husband - James Byers, Jr.

He was born in Virginia. [CAB, 692]

Mr. Byers is one of the oldest native residents of Mercer County, Pennsylvania. At an advanced age, he retains, in a remarkable degree, his mental and physical vigor; is as active as men generally are at thirty; is a gentleman of unusual intelligence, and is the proprietor of one of the best conducted and cleanest hotels in the country. He is a native of Shenango township, and moved to Fairview after its most important changes took place, but his acquaintance throughout the whole county was extensive. [HMC 1877, 32]

He was the first male white child born in Shenango township. In 1877 he was still living near Fairview village, and, at the age of seventy-six, retained all the vigor of youth, and stated that he was never ill; his form erect, his step firm, his muscles have never relaxed their original tension, and his hand is still as steady as in early manhood. [HMC 1877, 79]

He settled in Lake township, and later lived in Pulaski, where for a number of years he conducted a hotel. Later he farmed and resided in Venango County, Pennsylvania, remaining there twenty-one years, after which period he was the proprietor of a hotel known as the "Half-way House," in Fairview township. He and his estimable wife had a family of fourteen children.

From 1845 to 1864 Mr. and Mrs. Byers lived on a farm in French Creek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, working and prospering, and in the latter year removed to Mercer County, where he continued farming some years longer, eventually settling at Sandy Lake, Mercer County, where both died, he in his ninety-first year, she in her ninety-third year. He had the substantial qualities essential to success in material affairs, and also took part in matters of general interest, being a worker in the Democratic Party for many years. While in Lawrence County he was a captain of militia, and he never lost his interest in military activities. For sixty-seven years he held membership in the Presbyterian Church, and assisted with all its enterprises. [CAB, 692]

At the age of twenty-eight he settled in Lake Township, and eight years later he located in Pulaski, where for ten years he kept hotel. He then purchased a farm in Venango County, where he lived for twenty-one years, and then purchased what was known as the "Halfway House," in Fairview Township, and kept hotel for a number of years. [HMC 1888, 663]

He and his wife had a total of fourteen children. [HMC 1888, 663]
