He was born in the year 1797, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and came to Westmoreland County with his father. Upon the death of the elder man in 1804 he became the owner of the farm, which by that time, by dint of the constant hard work of father and son, had become a fertile and productive piece of land. [Another source states that he was born in Westmoreland County.]

He was the father of ten children.
