General Notes: Husband - James J. Brown

He was born in the old homestead, which stood where the borough of Mansfield, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, was afterward laid out. He was the second son of his father, receiving his education in the public and private schools. When seventeen years of age he left school to enter the wholesale grocery-store in which his father was a partner, in Pittsburgh, remaining there three years. Afterward he was engaged in the manufacture of agricultural implements for a number of years, and was then in the iron and steel business for some time. Later he was engaged in the paper-manufacturing business, being secretary and treasurer of the Union Paper-mill company.
He was a school director for nine years, and served as one of the town council. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and the G. A. R.; in religion he was a Presbyterian, and in politics a republican.

Civil War: When the first call was made for 75,000 men, in April, 1861, Mr. Brown enlisted in Co. K, 12th P. Regt.
