General Notes: Husband - Capt. Isaac C. Woodward

In 1816 he was brought by his parents to Chad Chalfant's, a relative of his mother, near Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and shortly after their arrival his father died. In 1819 the captain was taken by an old Quaker, by the name of Cattell, with whom he remained ten years. While with him he received his education in the subscription schools of the surrounding neighborhood. He learned the trade of carpenter, which he followed for several years. He next engaged in building steamboats, and during a period of thirty years built about twenty boats. During the Mexican War he built a boat for the United States government, which ran on the Rio Grande river. He also commanded steamboats on the Mississippi river and its principal branches. For several years he was president of the Pittsburgh, Brownsville & Geneva Packet Company, and was one of the company's largest stockholders. At the breaking out of the Civil War, he left the western waters and purchased a fine farm of three hundred acres, near Brownsville, where he engaged in farming and stock raising, making a speciality of fine sheep.
