General Notes: Husband - Capt. Ira Reese Butler

He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and in 1805 came with the family to Washington County. After his arrival there he attended school for two years, then learned the saddlery business. His health failing, he abandoned this pursuit by the advice of a physician, and in 1814 engaged as captain of a freight vessel on Lake Erie. He followed this vocation three years, then returned to Monongahela City and became captain of "The Eagle," a passenger boat on the river, remaining in that position two years, at the end of which time he bought a farm near Monongahela City, meanwhile working in the boatyard for Robert Beebe.
In 1839 he sold his property, and in 1840 purchased the "John Stockdale farm," where he later died.
He was a leading member of both the Whig and Republican parties, and served for twenty-five years as justice of the peace. In religion he was actively identified with the M. E. Church.

For two years after his arrival at Williamsport, Pennsylvania, he availed himself of such educational advantages as the place afforded. He then learned the saddlery business, and continued at it until the spring of 1814, when in consequence of lung troubles his physician advised him to seek some other occupation at once. The position of a supercargo of a vessel of cartel plying the waters of the great lakes while engaged in exchange of prisoners of war, etc., was then offered him and accepted. He at once recovered his health, and continued on the lakes some two or three years.
Returning to Williamsport he became an employe of the veteran boat-builder, Robert Beebe, whose boat-yard occupied the later site of Yohe, Corrin & Co.'s planing-mill, etc. Mr. Butler was a close observer, however, his later experience was of considerable benefit too, and he soon became proficient in the business of boat-building, and a partner of Mr. Beebe. No large steamboats, though, were built at this yard. The first large boat, the "Hercules," was built by this firm (Capt. Peter Shouse being a member) on the site of the later grist-mill. Afterwards several quite large boats were built by the same firm in the hollow or old bed of the creek, some thirty rods above the grist-mill. Messrs. Beebe and Butler also built boats at Elizabeth, and later, towards the year 1840, returned to Williamsport and built several boats for William Ihmsen in the hollow before mentioned.
Capt. Butler gave up boat-building in 1840, and in 1841 removed to a farm, which, being distant about five miles from Monongahela City, overlooked a beautiful scope of country and the town which was the scene of his early labors.
