He was educated in the Westmoreland County public schools and graduated from the Oberlin University of Ohio, in 1895. He taught school at Madison during a portion of the years 1895-96 and for two years and a half taught the Scottdale high school. Having studied law, he was admitted to the bar in Westmoreland County in 1900, and then began to practice his profession. He became the chairman of the Democratic committee for Westmoreland County.
