General Notes: Husband - John Black

Mathew Black, along with three other brothers, James, John and William, left Scotland about A. D. 1735, and came to Letterkenny, Donegal county, Ireland. Mathew Black had a family of four sons and two daughters. His son, John Black, came to America about 1795, and married Jane Criswell, at or near Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, when he moved to the headwaters of Slippy Rock, in Mercer township, Butler County, about 1797. He reared a family of six sons and four daughters. [BHCWC, 53]

John Black was born in Donegal county, Ireland, son of John Black, a native of the same county, where he died in 1783. His grandfather, James Black, born near Letterkenny, Ireland, was a son of James Black, a native of Scotland, who removed to Ireland towards the close of the Seventeenth century. The subject of this sketch came to the United States in 1793, and settled in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, where he married Jane Criswell, a native of Derry county, Ireland, in 1795. In 1797 they removed to Westmoreland county (an area now in Armstrong County), and in 1799 settled in what is now Marion township, Butler County, on the land where William and Joshua T. Black would later reside. He subsequently purchased another farm of 400 acres on the Middle Branch of Slippery Rock creek, where he built a saw mill in 1825 and later a grist mill, the only mill in that section for many years. It was known as Black's mill, and was a familiar landmark in pioneer times. He was one of the founders of West Unity United Presbyterian church, and a leading Democrat of his day. [HBC 1895, 1304]

He resided in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, for some time after his arrival in America. About the year 1800, accompanied by his wife and, perhaps, one or two small children, he came to Butler County, Pennsylvania, and settled upon a wild, unimproved tract (adjoining the possessions of Samuel McMurry), the premises later owned by his grandson, Robert Black.
About 1825 he built a saw mill, and soon after a grist mill, on Slippery Rock Creek near the southern border of Marion Township, and for many years thereafter Black's Mills were landmarks in a wide section of country.
During the Civil War, thirteen grandsons of John Black, Sr., sons of his sons, served in various armies of the United States, and four of them lost their lives. [HBC 1883, 430]

He was a native of Ireland, who first located east of the mountains in Pennsylvania. After his marriage to Jane Crisswell he settled in Butler County, Pennsylvania, on a tract of one thousand acres, where he acquired squatter's rights, and there remained until his death. [CAB, 541]

CAB, 541 does not list a son William nor daughter Julia Ann (but does list a son Julian.)
