General Notes: Husband - Joseph Bilhimer

He was born in a log house on the south bank of the Shenandoah river, six miles from Brock's Gap. When his father moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, he was left with his uncle, Henry Billhymer, in Rockingham County, Virginia. Later, in 1818, at the age of six years, he was brought to Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, where he remained for over forty years. His education was obtained in the common schools of the county, known as "subscription schools," and confined to short terms at odd times, no continuous period extending over three months. For several years he was engaged in freight hauling over the pike from Pittsburgh to Baltimore and Philadelphia, taking twenty-four days to make the trip. In 1835 he was offered a position as overseer of thirty slaves on the plantation of an uncle in Virginia, but although the salary was largely in excess of the small amount he was then receiving as freight driver, he declined, being strongly averse to slavery in any form. He was a member of the United Brethren church. In politics he was formerly a Whig, later a Republican, and his first presidential vote was cast for Martin Van Buren.
It was he who changed the spelling of the name to Bilhimer, although other branches of the family write it Billhimer or Billheimer.
