He acquired his literary education at the Indiana State Normal and the California State Normal Schools, and subsequently took up the study of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, from which institution he graduated June 15, 1899. Following this, for a period of some years, he practiced his profession in Bolivar, Pennsylvania, and was highly successful. He was a Presbyterian in religion, and a Republican in politics.
