General Notes: Husband - David Postlethwaite

He was born near Mifflin, in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, and accompanied his parents on their removal to Westmorland County when about twelve years of age, and after a little over a decade spent there, came to Jefferson County, locating at Perrysville, where his father purchased 200 acres of land and developed a farm. He died there [his father?], leaving five children, of whom David was the eldest.

On leaving the parental roof he went to Ringgold township, Jefferson County, where he purchased 300 acres of timber land and erected a hewed-log house and round-log barn, and also cleared considerable land. In 1840 he bought 625 acres one mile east of Perrysville, adjoining the village of Whitesville, where he also developed a good farm and engaged in lumbering, becoming one of the pioneers in the latter occupation in the county. For many years he followed rafting on the Mahoning creek and Allegheny river, met with success in his undertakings, and through his industry, good management and business ability succeeded in accumulating a large amount of real estate in timber and farming lands. Previous to his death he owned over 1,000 acres of land in Ringgold and Perry townships, which he divided into farms for his children. In 1855, his worthy wife, who had shared all the hardships of his early life, passed to her reward, and in 1876 he, too, was called to his final rest.

He was born in what is now Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and grew to manhood in Westmoreland County. He preceded his father to Jefferson County, selecting the location and assisting in clearing a part of the homestead. About 1818 he purchased three hundred acres of timber land in Ringgold township where all his family but the youngest child, William Perry, were born. He built a hewed-log house and a round-log barn, and during the twenty years and more of residence there managed to clear a good farm. In 1840 he bought six hundred and twenty-five acres one mile east of Perrysville, adjoining the village of Whitesville, and here developed another farm. Mr. Postlethwaite was a pioneer lumberman, cutting lumber to pay for his land, and for many years rafted on Mahoning creek and the Allegheny river. Besides farming and lumbering he raised considerable stock, and one year drove sixty head of cattle to Mifflin County. He had excellent judgment in business transactions, and by good management coupled with industry acquired a large amount of property, owning over one thousand acres in Ringgold and Perry townships, as well as a farm in Indiana County, and gave a farm to each of his large family. He was a Democrat and a member of the Presbyterian Church. During the war of 1812 he enlisted and went as far as Kittanning, where news of peace was received. [HJC 1917 II, 581]
