He received a common school education, and was reared a farmer. After reaching his majority, he bought fifty acres of land from his mother, to which he has added fifty-one acres and made all of the improvements. In connection with farming, he was also interested in oil producing, having several wells on his farm. Politically, he was a Republican, and in religion, was connected with the Methodist Episcopal church of North Washington.
