He was born in Wittenberg, Germany, immigrated to America and settled near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a colony brought over by George Rapp. He shortly afterwards deserted the colony and settled in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, near Harold's church, where he engaged for a time in teaching the "young idea how to shoot," after which he removed to East Huntingdon township, where he lived till his death. He was a democrat in politics and a member of the Lutheran church, in which he was at various times deacon, elder and choir leader.
