When a young man he worked for several years in the Tidioute oil fields of Pennsylvania, then returned to Freehold township and purchased a farm of sixty-seven acres. There he lived for thirty years, becoming one of the prosperous agriculturalists of his town. He then sold the farm to his son-in-law, James E. Pelton, and retired to a home in Sugargrove. He was a Republican, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
