General Notes: Husband - J. H. Beates

He was reared in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, whence he removed to Centre County in 1850, and there erected a sawmill, which he operated a number of years. Later he purchased a farm, on which he made many substantial and valuable improvements. He was an ardent Republican in politics, but never cared for official positions higher than the township offices which he held. His father was a Lutheran minister.
