General Notes: Husband - Joseph A. Heckendorn

He commenced his education in the local schools, but later attended the State Normal at Millersville, Pennsylvania, and the schools of Clearfield, thus acquiring a good common-school education. After leaving school he engaged in teaching for a few terms. With his father he learned the black-smith's trade, which he followed for five years, being for one year in the employ of a railroad contractor. Reportedly, he was a very rapid and systematic mechanic, and had wonderful endurance.
In October, 1884, Mr. Heckendorn embarked in merchandising in Karthaus, which he continued until February, 1895, when he sold his stock of goods, but kept ownership of the store buildings. In the meantime he had become interested in the coal business, having an interest in one colliery and owning one exclusively, and he was also secretary and treasurer of the Salt Lick Oil & Gas Company. After disposing of his store, he was interested in the development of the fire-clay industry in connection with his other lines of business.
He took a deep interest in public affairs, always supporting the Democratic party by his ballot, and he was a strong advocate of the free coinage of gold and silver, and filled many township offices, including that of county auditor. Socially, he was connected with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and had all the highest degrees of the order. Mr. Heckendorn was also a member of the Masonic fraternity.
Religiously he was a consistent member of the Methodist Church, while his wife clung to the faith in which she was reared-that of the Lutheran Church.
He was a man of above average size, of splendid physique and pleasant address, progressive and public-spirited.
