He attended school until he was twenty years of age, after which he mastered the cabinet finishing and building trade at Mercer, PA, remaining in the employ of King Brothers for two years. He then removed to Greenville and, after learning the painter's trade and following it for two years, went to Illinois. After farming in that state for a year he returned to Pennsylvania and was identified for some time with the development of its oil fields. Locating at Grove City, in 1880, he engaged in house painting for nine years and in 1889 entered the employ of the Bessemer (then the P. S. and L. E.) Railway as a painter. He continued, thus engaged, in a subordinate capacity, until 1891, when he was appointed foreman of road painters, retaining that position for eight years. He was actively and prominently connected with the fraternal work of the Knights of Pythias, belonging to Grove City Lodge No. 35 and Uniformed Rank No. 56 of Greenville. In his religious faith, he was devoted to the interests of the Methodist church. [HMC 1909, 1097]
