General Notes: Husband - William Stephens

He settled on the "Manor," on lands, part of which were later occupied by Rev. Thomas W. Stephens, his son. The lands were settled by Wm. Johnston in 1805. He was a blacksmith, and carried on a shop for several years, using coal packed on horseback from the mines to the shop; most of it was carried five miles. Early settlers frequently carried coal along with them when they went to the shop to get work done. His purchase included three hundred acres, upon which he lived till his death. About the year 1820, he built a saw mill on Yellow creek, on site of the later mill of Peter Coy. In going back and forth to the mill he carried his rifle and by twenty-one shots killed nineteen deer. His sons, Thomas W. and Giles, both long remembered going to school in buckskin pants and bear-skin caps, and having no shoes till they were young men.
