General Notes: Husband - Benjamin Boles Westgate

He was educated in public schools and spent his early life at Fishkill and Providence, Rhode Island, coming to Pennsylvania in 1839 and locating at Riceville, Crawford County. His early business was the manufacture of bent-wood ware, cheese boxes, bowls, etc. After coming to Riceville he established a sash, blind and door factory, marketing his products in Erie, Pennsylvania, transporting them from mill to market by teams. He operated his Riceville factory for twenty-five years and was rated one of the substantial men of the town. He was a Whig in politics, later a Republican, holding the office of postmaster and justice of the peace. He was an attendant of the Congregational church, of which his wife was a member.

The original firm was B. B. Westgate & Sons. In 1866 the plant was sold to Joshua Bruner, who operated it two years. In 1866 the entire Westgate family moved from Riceville to Vineland, New Jersey, and resided there the next two years. At the end of that time the son, Reuben B. Westgate, purchased back the sash and blind works and continued to operate them until his death. After his death the executors of his estate continued to operate the plant until 1880.
