He was born at Taneytown, near Hagerstown, Maryland, coming to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, with his father when about five years of age. During his youth and early manhood he was the assistant of his father in the labors of the homestead, and on the occasion of his marriage bought a farm near Murrysville, and there passed the remainder of his life.
