He was a farmer and storekeeper in Wellsburg, WV, for some years, and before the time of railroads he rode to Philadelphia on horseback to purchase dry goods.

Her father was a merchant, lost his life on one of his trips to New Orleans, where he was traveling to buy sugar, while en route overland on horseback, he was murdered in Ken­tucky, supposedly for the money on his person, having a considerable amount at the time.
