He was a native and resident of Germany, where he married. He had eight children, three born in Germany and the others born in Greene County, Ohio.

He was a native of Ebershuetz, Germany, whence he emigrated to the United States in 1816, settling near Bellebrook, Greene County, Ohio. He was a farmer of common school education and a member of the Reformed church.
