General Notes: Husband - Hans Ulrich [2] Sphar

This family came to America in 1749 with nine children; he and his wife were both age 40 years at that time. Upon arrival in America he and his brother-in-law, Jacob Seyler, both purchased a farm "20 studen" (60 miles) from Philadelphia, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. (At that time a studen was known as the distance a man could walk in a day.) They remained in Lancaster County for 12 years before moving their family and possessions to Frederick County, Virginia. In 1761 he purchased 70 acres in Frederick County for which he paid thirty pounds. Court records in Winchester, Virginia, show he purchased additional land in 1764, 1765 and 1767, adding 248 acres adjacent to his original 70 acres. This land was on the Opequon Creek north of Leetown, northwest of Charles Town. Berkley County was formed from Frederick County, Virginia, in 1772, and this area later became part of West Virginia.
He made "his mark on his will this 2nd day of September Anno Domini 1769, seventeen sixty-nine." His will was filed on 6 March 1770, Will Book 3, page 515, Circuit Court of Frederick County, Virginia. His estate was divided between his wife and eight (out of ten living) children. Theodorus did not receive a division because he had already received thirty pounds, and Walter was not mentioned.
