The Young family, for several generations, lived at Harmony, Pennsylvania, his father having a tailor shop there for a long period. He learned the trade with his father and followed it at Harmony until he moved to Iowa, prior to the opening of the Civil War. He served in an Iowa regiment with the rank of captain. In his eightieth year he was a resident of Pittsburgh, and had been for seventeen years.
