General Notes: Husband - Col. James Sample

Another source gives his date of birth as November 25, 1756. [PAHP, 252]

He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and at its close received payment for his services in land. His tract was located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, near the mouth of Girty's run, and he settled there in 1789 or 1790.

He was a native of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and located on Girty run, in what is now Shaler township, Allegheny County, some time previous to 1780. There he resided until his death. He was the father of eight children, all of whom were deceased by 1889 except William, who resided at Sharpsburg. [HAC 1889 ii, 412]

He was a noted Indian fighter and Revolutionary soldier. He located in Ross township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1790, and there owned four hundred acres of land. He was a farmer and miller and was a man of prominence until his death at age of seventy-six years. His life was spent amid pioneer surroundings and was a constant conflict with the wild forces of nature and the native Indians. He fought these foes as well as the uniformed enemies of his county during the Revolutionary War and once had the sorrow of knowing wife and child were in the hands of the natives. But their lives were saved by a squaw, to whom Mrs. Sample had shown kindness in more peaceful days, and they safely reached home. James Sample was the second elected sheriff of Allegheny County, and until his death retained a strong influence in the county. [GPHWP, 796]

He and his wife had fourteen children, eight of whom grew to be men and women. William was the youngest of this family.

He commanded the 6th Company of the 3rd Battalion of York County Militia during the Revolutionary War.

He was an officer in the 6th Company, 3rd Battalion of Cumberland County Militia during the Revolutionary period. At the close of the war he received grants of land in Maryland, where he lived for a while, and in Pennsylvania, where he was awarded two tracts, one at Wildwood and another where Millvale was later located, and was appointed the second sheriff of Allegheny County.
He was engaged in farming as his life work and amassed a considerable fortune in that field of industry.

He was born in Cumberland, whence he came in 1796 to Allegheny County, settling in Ross township, taking land in compensation for his services as a soldier in the Revolutionary war. He built thereon a number of mills, among them the first grist mill ever erected north of the Allegheny river, and a distillery, also a snuff manufactory and saw mill, all these buildings being situated at Gertys Run. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

General Notes: Wife - Christiana Taggart

from Northumberland Co, PA

She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and accompanied her parents, to
Northumberland County in 1775.

She and all her family were taken prisoners by the Indians two weeks after the birth of her son, Thomas; his father, who was captain of a company of minutemen, being out on a scout at the time. The entire family was rescued from captivity the same night, through the assistance of a squaw to whom Mrs. Sample had furnished clothing and other comforts the winter before. While the Indians were engaged in a war-dance around the scalps taken the day before, the squaw procured a light canoe, only large enough to carry one person safely, and taking the three oldest children, ferried them across the river through the floating ice one at a time; she then gave the canoe to the mother, who paddled to the other side, carrying her two-weeks-old babe.
