He was baptized Rev. Matthew Gantzel, an itinerant minister in the Penn's Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, area.
He came to Venango County with his father in 1802. He served in the War of 1812 in the same company and for the same period of time as his brother David.
He died of typhoid fever.
