General Notes: Husband - Richard Woodward

He came from England and settled in Middletown township, Chester (later Delaware) County, Pennsylvania.

The paternal ancestor of this family, William Woodward, was an English Quaker, coming to America with William Penn in 1682. Woodward owned forty acres of land adjoining the newly-founded city of Philadelphia. Penn was desirous of disseminating the Quaker faith and doctrines into the interior of the colony, and accordingly offered Woodward one thousand acres of land in Chester County for forty acres near Philadelphia. Woodward accepted the offer and settled on the Chester County tract, later known as "Marshalltown." The Woodwards still [1889] own a portion of the "Marshalltown" tract, where now stands a large Quaker church, called Bradford. (Another source states that this one thousand acres was purchased by Richard's son, Richard.)

He bought a tract of two hundred and thirty acres in Thornbury township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, March 6, 1687, of John Sinnock (Simcock?), being a part of fifteen hundred and fifty acres the latter had purchased from William Penn before leaving England. On part of this purchase Richard Woodward settled, and there some of his children were born.

General Notes: Wife - Jane [Unk]

About 1714, as a widow, she removed with her daughter Sarah to within the limits of Concord Meeting, Chester County, Pennsylvania.
