His father had purchased the residence of Dr. John Gilpin, on the site of the old fort at Kittanning, Pennsylvania, and had his home there at the time of his death. The place was inherited by his son, Alexander, Jr., who made additions to the old mansion and called it the "Alexander Hotel."
