General Notes: Husband - William Robinson Dunlap

He received but meagre educational advantages, starting out to make his own way in the world when he was but thirteen years of age, at which time his mother died. Following this he secured employment with Jesse Gray and S. Walters, his wages being three dollars per month, and he continued to work as a farm hand until going to Warren County, Pennsylvania, where he spent about four years in the lumber business under Joseph Hall. In 1851 Mr. Dunlap went west to St. Louis and then Calhoun County, Illinois, and after a short stay removed to the lead mines of Michigan. During all this time he had carefully saved his earnings, and on his return home was able to purchase 130 acres of land in Derry township, Westmoreland County, his uncle John Robinson assisting him in paying for it. This farm he sold in 1856 and bought a tract of 106 acres located in Salem township, which was underlaid with a rich vein of coal. He operated this land until 1866, when he sold it and bought a tract of 253 acres, which he divided into three parts, giving his son two of these and operating the other himself. He continued to be engaged in farming for a number of years and carried on an extensive stock raising business, but in 1898 retired from active life and moved to Blairsville. He was for some years a deacon in the old Salem Church, but later attended the Blairsville Presbyterian Church. Formerly a Whig, he later became a Republican, and for a time, while a resident of Westmoreland, acted as school director.

He was reared on a Washington township farm and attended the common schools. Leaving school he went to Warren County, Pennsylvania, and was engaged for five years in shipping lumber to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. At the end of this time he returned to Westmoreland County and began farming. In 1854 he bought a farm in Derry township, which he sold four years later and purchased a Salem township farm on which he resided for ten years. He then (1868) disposed of it and bought a farm in Derry township, on which he then resided and to which he added by additional purchases until it contained four hundred acres of land.
He was a republican, while all his brothers, his father, and his grandfather were democrats.
